Reiki- Healing the Mind, Body & Spirit

The word Reiki translates to Universal (Rei) Life Force Energy (ki), which is the energy that runs through our bodies giving us life. In a Reiki session the practitioner simply channels more of that same energy into your body. The flow of Reiki energy brings the body, mind & spirit to its optimal state of alignment, balance & harmony.

Our bodies, like everything else in the world, run on energy. The atoms that make up our body chemistry contain positive, negative & neutral charges. Our bodies work in a way that is similar to a rechargeable battery. When the battery, the energy center, is low on energy, the object that it is providing energy to can’t function properly. It is slow & sluggish. We have seven main energy centers in our physical body, known as chakras. When these energy centers are running on low energy they too become slow, sluggish & don’t function properly. We live in a hectic world. Many of us spend large parts of our day rushing about in “fight or flight mode”, which causes a great deal of stress. Stress causes our energy centers to drain even faster. Our energy centers become unbalanced. Energy gets blocked in different areas & these blockages show up in our body as aches, pains & the numerous illnesses & diseases which are so common in our society today.

Reiki treatments help to bring the body back into balance by channeling into the body a steady flow of Universal Life Force Energy, similar to plugging the battery into the charger, which allows the body to relax & exit “fight or flight mode”, releasing stress, & in turn allowing the release of blocked energy.  Your chakras – your energy centers – regain their balance & your body is returned to its natural state of health & well-being.

Reiki has become increasingly popular in the U.S. over the last several years. It is not a replacement for, but rather a holistic complement to conventional medicine. Reiki works hand in hand with conventional medicine to decrease anxiety, diminish pain, reduce side effects from treatments for various illnesses, strengthen the immune system & accelerate healing. Reiki is included on the roster of services available at numerous hospitals throughout the U.S. including Memorial Sloan Kettering, Johns Hopkins, Columbia Presbyterian, Valley Hospital, Hackensack University & many more.

Wondering what to expect during a Reiki treatment? You will be asked to lie on a massage table, fully clothed while the practitioner lightly places his/her hands on or over various areas of your body. Often, people feel a sense of deep relaxation, an almost meditative state, while others feel subtle sensations often in the form of heat or tingling. Some see colors or pictures in their mind’s eye. Some people experience immediate results during or after a treatment, while others experience healing shifts over time. The best way to understand Reiki is to experience it yourself.

Wondering how often you should receive Reiki?  Like all methods of treatment, Reiki is most useful when treatment is received on a consistent basis.  It is recommended that you initially have four sessions approximately one week apart to open & begin the balancing of your body systems & then adjust the frequency of the sessions to suit your individual needs.  Most people find it helpful to come more often when they are in the midst of a physical or emotional crisis.  Many people continue regular Reiki treatments to maintain their energetic balance, receiving Reiki once a month.
